While one amateur earned her way into the CN Canadian Women’s Open on Wednesday, June 29th, one from Eastern Ontario will have to wait on an exemption from Golf Canada for her chance to play in the LPGA Tour event in late August.

Amateur Jessica Wallace of Langley, B.C., carded a final round, even-par 72 and went on to defeat Kirby Dreher of Fort St. John, B.C., in a one-hole playoff to capture the season’s third and final event on the 2011 CN Canadian Women’s Tour at Blue Springs Golf Club in Acton, Ontario on Wednesady.

Wallace, a member of Team Canada, carded three birdies on the day along with three bogeys to finish with a two-day total of +1 (145), earning her first CN Canadian Women’s Tour victory.

“When I was playing my actual round, I had no idea if I was in contention or not,” Wallace said. “When I found out that there were only a couple of players tied at 1-over, and then that Kirby was the one I would play in the playoff…I played junior with her back in the day and I haven’t seen her in years. It means a lot to come out with a win over someone who has done so well on the pro circuit.”

With the victory, Wallace secured the Tour’s final champion’s exemption into the 2011 CN Canadian Women’s Open, August 22-28 at Hillsdale Golf and Country Club in Mirabel, Que. The 20-year old University of Colorado senior is ecstatic to have played her way into Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship.

“That was the whole reason why I came here, to play in this tournament so I could get into the CN Canadian Women’s Open,” added Wallace. “My brother [Darren] played in the Canadian Open like seven years ago, so ever since he got in, I was like, that would be so awesome if I could play in my National Open too. I’m just so psyched. That was my goal all along.”

With the completion of the CN Canadian Women’s Tour schedule, a total of six players earned exemptions into the 2011 CN Canadian Women’s Open via Tour championship events.

LPGA Tour and LPGA Futures Tour member, Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ont., earned the season’s first of three champion’s exemptions with a victory at Squamish Valley Golf Club in Squamish, B.C., while LPGA Futures Tour member, Katy Harris of Humble, Tex., captured the Tour’s second event at Club de golf Beloeil in Beloeil, Que. Wallace rounded out the champion’s exemption awards with her victory in Acton.

Dreher, along with 15-year old Team Canada Development Squad member, Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam, B.C., and LPGA Futures Tour player, Danielle Mills of Pointe-Claire, Que., also secured exemptions into the 2011 CN Canadian Women’s Open based on the Tour’s season-long Order of Merit, which afforded exemptions to the top-3 point-getters, not otherwise exempt into Canada’s National Open Championship.

Shepley, meanwhile, captured her second consecutive Jocelyne Bourassa Player of the Year award, topping the Tour’s Order of Merit points list, while Keel was the Low Amateur of the Year.

Augusta James of Bath, Ontario did not compete at the Blue Springs tournament, instead choosing to play in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Bandon Dunes in Oregon.  She may regret that decision after she was ousted in the first round of match play by a tally of 8 & 6 while at the same time dropping to a tie for 7th place in the CN Women’s Tour Order of Merit.  She must now rely on Golf Canada to use one of their remaining exemptions for the CN Canadian Women’s on her, a possibility she was well aware of before she headed to Oregon.
