With a lot of attention on the Accenture World Match Play Championship this week, almost lost in the shuffle are two other PGA Tour endorsed events that begin play on Thursday.
Down on Mexico the PGA Tour is running an opposite field event, the Mayakoba Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun. In the field is Kingstonian Matt McQuillan who is looking to rebound off three straight missed cuts. The rookie told Flagstick last week that he feels his swing is on track and expects that only having to learn a single golf course (as opposed to multiple layouts at the last three tournaments) should help him fell a little more confidence. “Courses like Spyglass and Pebble Beach (2 of the 3 courses in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am rotation) require a lot of local knowledge if you want to play well. I’m looking forward to getting in extra practice in Mexico so that is less of a factor.”
McQuillan is scheduled to start the first round off the 10th tee at the El Camaleon course at 12:25 p.m. local time on Thursday. He will have a 7:50 a.m. tee time on Friday.
The Nationwide Tour is in action this week, kicking off their season with an event in Panama followed by one in Columbia. After the tee times came out we had a few emails from readers wondering why former Deep River and Belleville resident Jon Mills was not in the field.
We’ve been informed that Jon and his wife Megan are expecting a child so Jon chose to stay closer to home rather than not be able to return home easily from Panama or Columbia when the big day arrived. We wish the best to the entire family on their impending addition.
