Five Things To Know…about the new FootJoy Pro/SLX Golf Shoes

When you have a successful product it can be hard to veer away from the things that made it successful. That said, you need to keep advancing, for the sake of performance and consumer appeal.

It’s the case for storied golf shoe and apparel maker FootJoy who was looking to build on the popularity of their PRO/SL models.

The result is the new Pro/SLX and Pro/SLX Carbon which was recently introduced. It has already gained popularity among touring pros, including Canada’s Corey Conners. “Really liking the comfort and feel. Lightweight and comfortable,” Conners shared with Bubba Kroeger of the FootJoy Tour Department. “Traction and stability feel great. Walked a few rounds last few days and feet feel great. Honestly nothing I would want changed with them – I’m a big fan!”

We’ve spent some time testing the PRO/SLX Carbon and here are five takeaways:

Off To The Races

The big move with the new models is found where you can’t see it, on the bottom of the sole. This is where the “PWR TRAX System” is located, which combines numerous design features to enhance interaction with the ground. That includes the Race Trak outsole with nodules located on the outer edges, here they have the most impact. In the interior of the Trak is a “3D X-Wing” that is meant to enhance stability during the swing.

Making An Impression

Many elements of these shoes are meant to enhance comfort, among them is the insoles. The Ortholite Impressions FitBed used is pillowy soft right from the start, but better yet, molds to your foot over time for a custom fit.

ProISLX BOA

A Popular Fit

One design element that made the prior Pro/SL shoes popular was the the fit. This was due to the shaping, which continues in these new models. The Laser Plus Last (lasts are forms used to create the shape of the upper) has a full rounded toe area, a standard fit across the instep and forefoot, and a slight narrower heel. That heel is also enhanced with a 3D molded ankle collar with increased padding; the size and molding helps reduce heel slippage and possible friction issues in this area.

Soft But Strong

The shoe surface may not be the first thing that attracts the eyes of many consumers but as a former retailer and having written about equipment for some time, it gets my attention. The softness of the Pro/SLX and Pro/SLX Carbin uppers comes from the use of “ChromoSkin” leather that is supple. That flexibility should reduce creasing over time. The upper is weatherproof, backed by a two-year warranty.

Options Galore

Colour-ways are one thing, but the ProISLX options include the more stable Carbon model, designs for men and women, and the option of laced or BOA. The latter eliminates traditional lacing and further enhances fit and stability.

Retail pricing in Canada: Pro|SLX Women’s – $230 CAD, Pro|SLX Laced – $260 CAD, Pro|SLX BOA – $300 CAD, Pro|SLX Carbon – $300 CAD.
