Notable Holes: #17 Whitetail Golf Club

The rugged Whitetail Golf Club, carved out of a forested 200-acre tract of land in the Upper Ottawa Valley has been welcoming golfers to a full eighteen holes since 2004. Those who may the journey to the Eganville, Ontario area regularly report their surprise and delight after playing the layout for the first time.

At 6500-yards it does not overwhelm you from the length department, but where it tends to dazzle visitors is with the shape and variety of holes across the property. Elevation changes and land forms pushed the routing into one where no two holes play the same. They each provide an individual test of your skills.

Six ponds mark the land over which you play, and as a result, there is trouble to be found. The final hole, a short par five offers a last opportunity to make a birdie, but often you are making up for the score you have taken on the previous hole.

Officially, the 17th hole measures 188 yards from the back tees, but with an expansive green surface it is not uncommon to have a back hole location and more than 200 yards to traverse to the target. Playing over a pond and often with winds cutting across your line of play, it makes for a stern puzzle for many golfers.

It is ideally positioned on the course as the last big test of your abilities head to the clubhouse. A score of three here is well-earned and allows you to finally take a breath of relief.
