Quinte-Kingston Intersectional Matches (QKIM) completed its 16th season in late September with new champions crowned in the Men’s Senior (55+) and Super Senior (65+) Divisions. Cataraqui GCC won the Senior Men’s Division while Garrison GCC brought home Super Senior Division honours.

Senior Men’s Division

Section1 of the Senior Men’s Division took place at Cataraqui GCC on September 21, 2023 to determine divisional supremacy. The home team did not disappoint, scoring an impressive 41 points and usurping the 2022 champions from Roundel Glen GC by holding off a strong charge by second place Garrison GCC which scored 36 points. Roundel Glen and Napanee GCC finished in third and fourth place. Earning three wins and six points each from the champion Cataraqui team were Gawain Robertson, Jim Laidley, Bill Crowe, Harvey Milne and Steve Fox.

Three Garrison members also went undefeated: Rob Lloyd, Erik Lockhart and Dexter Guy.

The Smuggler’s Glen team will be moving up to Section 1 next season after hosting and winning an extremely tight Section 2 competition with Trillium Wood and Amherstview. With the final group remaining on the course, Smuggler’s Glen held a slim 1-point lead over Trillium Wood and they were able to hold on with a solid finish by Joe Matthews who delivered 2 wins. Shawn Selleck and Mike Keirstead also went undefeated for Smuggler’s Glen while Trillium Wood’s Steve Edwards, Paul Higson and Tim Clark and Amherstview’s George Ho won all their matches.

The Section 3 intersectional matches were held at Loyalist GC under clear, sunny skies with teams visiting from Rivendell GC, The Landings GC, and Picton GCC. Despite an early lead by host Loyalist, the Senior Men from Rivendell managed to keep pace before pulling ahead for the win. Six-point winners included Rivendell’s Troy Merrick, Dave McLay and Mike Bucmer; Loyalist’s Mark Hudeins and Henny Van Kooten and Picton’s Peter Doyle. QKIM’s own Director of Rules and Competition, Michael Purcell also came through for The Landings with 3 wins. It should be noted that Michael also followed up this fine performance a few days later with his 5th career ace at his home golf course.

The fourth and final Section of Senior Men’s play took place at Briar Fox GC. In their inaugural QKIM match, the team from Inverary GCC lead straight out the gates and for a while, looked like they might take home the Section 4 plaque. The focus shifted to Colonnade and Briar Fox who were neck and neck with 2 groups remaining. In the end, the team from Briar Fox prevailed. Inverary finished third and Camden Braes fourth. Dave Freeland, Peter Sims and Peter Gentile will have their names entered into the record books as the first ever 6-point winners for Inverary GC in QKIM competition. Brian Dunville, Jim McCambridge and Larry St. Croix went undefeated for Briar Fox as did Camden Braes’ Brian Wolfram.

Super Senior Men’s Division

Section 1 of any QKIM Division is always significant given that the winning team is crowned the year’s champion. But sometimes there’s an individual or two who takes some of the focus away by having an unbelievable performance. That’s exactly what happened this year on September 21, 2023 at Garrison GCC. The home team was crowned the 2023 Super Senior Champion after earning a remarkable win but had to share the stage with 73-year-old Roundel Glen golfer, Richard Papp, who created a memory for life. On the 145-yard 7th hole, Papp calmly landed his tee shot on the right side of the green and then watched his ball roll down the slope and into the cup. It was his first hole-in-one of his career, and in competition no less. The perfect shot was witnessed by Garrison’s Rob Franklin, Napanee’s Steve Smith and Smuggler’s Glen’s Dan Morrison.

In actual Section 1 play, Garrison started strong and went on to deliver a convincing victory with all players contributing points. Roundel Glen edged Napanee for 2nd place thanks to a 5-point finish by Al Sutton in the final group. Six-point winners: from the champion Garrison team were: Bob Ferguson, John Futtit, Kim Hutchinson and Ken McMillan; Napanee’s Bob Casement and Steve Smith; and Glenn Caird from Smuggler’s Glen.

Section 2 competition took place at Loyalist GCC with the host team welcoming Cataraqui and Amherstview. A very entertaining and tightly contested affair was won by Cataraqui in the late innings. All three teams were tied after 6 of the 8 groups reported their scores. Cataraqui was able to pull ahead in the final two groups when John Molloy delivered 4 points, followed by Bill Crowe’s 3 points. In addition to John Molloy, undefeated Cataraqui team members consisted of Harvey Milne, Dennis Cameron and Ron Southward, while Cecil Vrieswyk from Loyalist and Geoff Henning and Gord Rogers from Amherstview accomplished the feat.

Trillium Wood GC was the scene of Section 3 of the Men’s Super Senior Division. The team from Rivendell was looking to win its 4th Men’s intersectional of 2023, but was denied by a strong Trillium Wood team, which put its home course advantage to good use to win the Section. Six-point winners from Trillium Wood were: Steve Edwards, Mike Shirriff, Tim Clark, Roger Ling and Doug Beale, while George Derue was the only Rivendell player to turn the trick.
