The Quinte – Kingston Intersectional Matches (QKIM) continued its drive through the 2023 season with two more divisions being decided. The Senior Women’s team from Cataraqui GGC captured divisional honours as did the Rivendell GC Men’s B team.

Senior Women’s Division

On August 28, 2023, Trillium Wood GC was the host site for the top-flight of the Senior Women’s Division. Unfortunately for the host team, the women from Cataraqui GCC were in tremendous form, picking up nearly all the points up for grabs and doubled up on second place Trillium Wood. The home team was able to hang on to second place with the teams from Colonnade and Garrison finishing third and fourth, respectively. Earning three wins and six points each from the champion Cataraqui team were Gail Pimm, Janice Stenzl, Judy Valberg, Janice Baker-Milne and Jan Devonshire. The lone player stopping the Cataraqui sweep was Trillium Wood’s Patsy Mitchell, who also won all three of her matches.

In Senior Women’s Section 2 action at Smuggler’s Glen GC, the host team was not to be denied and will be moving up to Section 1 for next season. The Smuggler Glen team spread the scoring around and was able to withstand a late charge by Oak Hills GC whose top seeded player, Sue Butchers earned three wins in the final grouping. Picton finished third while Loyalist placed fourth. Other players winning all their matches were Smuggler’s Glen’s Tracy Arnett, Korin Flindall and Ange Denstedt; and from Picton, Kathy O’Driscoll.

The Section 3 intersectional matches were held at Napanee GCC and turned out to be hotly contested battle with only 2 points separating the top 3 teams. When the fog of war cleared, it was the Rideau Lakes Senior Women’s team standing strong as champions of Section 3. Camden Braes fell just short by 1 point in second place and 1 point ahead of The Landings. Napanee rounded out the standings but only 5points behind the winners. The winning Rideau Lakes team did not have any of its players go undefeated, which in intersectional play is a rarity thus exposing a well- rounded team from top to bottom. Although not counting in the points standings, first alternate Lyn Kearns did win her 3 matches for Rideau Lakes. Undefeated players included Napanee’s Vicky Holwell; The Landings’ Kathy Jackson and Teresa Alm; and Angela Nugent and Kelly Hanson from Camden Braes.

The fourth and final Section of Senior Women’s play at Roundel Glen GC saw the home side victorious over Briar Fox and Amherstview. Roundel Glen’s top 3 seeds – Caroline Deans, Patricia Tracey and Jessica MacDonell – made a timely delivery of 2 wins and 4 points each to ensure a 3-point victory over Briar Fox and Amherstview. Briar Fox also had three team members going undefeated in their matches: Karen Brant-Taylor, Bonny Mitchell and Christine Farrell.

Men’s B Division

QKIM’s Men’s B Division, consisting of 3 Sections, completed competition on Sept 10, 2023 with Section 1 play at The Landings GC. Four teams competed for Divisional supremacy, and it was the Men’s team from Rivendell that came out on top with a 4-point win over Garrison GCC. This was a much larger margin of victory for Rivendell, compared to the team’s championship win in the previous year when it won a tiebreaker against The Landings. This season, The Landings finished third and Briar Fox fourth, to close out the top level of the Men’s B Division. Undefeated six-point winners from the champion Rivendell team consisted of Matt Hulton and Ray Coates. Garrison’s Garth Mitchell and Tom Martineau and Briar Fox’s Jamie Brant were also undefeated.

Team Rivendell

In Sections 2 and 3, home course advantage proved to be a formidable force as Amherstview in Section 2 and Picton in Section 3, both won their Sections.

Amherstview defeated Napanee and Camden Braes in another close competition. Four-point winners carried the day for Amherstview with Andrew Garron, Andy Kent, Jared Gibbons and Nick Hegarty going undefeated. Napanee’s Zack Slaven, Rob Barabru and Bob Casement also turned the trick to lead their team to a second- place finish in Section 2.

Team Amhertsview

Picton GCC delivered a consistent and robust performance against Loyalist and Colonnade to coast to victory in Section 3 to win the right to move up to Section 2 in 2024. Picton was led by Ron Sammy, Lukas Lackner and Peter Doyle, who each won both of their matches as did Scott McDonald and Jim Scott for Loyalist and Janson Smith, the top seed for Colonnade.

Stay tuned for more results as the QKIM season concludes at the end of September with action from the Senior Men and Super Senior Men Divisions.
