Huntsville, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Team Canada Development Squad member Augusta James of Bath, Ont. is atop the leaderboard in the Junior Girls division while Men’s Development Squad member Adam Svensson of Surrey B.C. is tied with three others in the Junior Boys divisions through the first round of the CN Future Links Ontario Championship at Deerhurst Highlands Golf Club in Huntsville, Ont.
On the girls side, James,18, shot an impressive 5-under (68) that included five birdies and an eagle. James, the 2010 Ontario Junior Girls Champion, went 6-under on the Deerhurst Highlands’ par 5’s to take a 5-stroke lead heading into Saturday’s second round.
“On the 14th hole I hit my drive down the middle, exactly where I wanted it and then hit a 6 iron to about 5 feet and made the uphill putt, a very clean hole,” said James about her eagle. “Things went really well today. I hit my driver great and had control over my long irons and hybrids. Tomorrow I just want to go out and continue to play the way I did today and if I score the same, then that’s a bonus.”
James was the only junior girl under par on the day as she holds a 5-stroke lead over Mackenzie Brooke-Henderson of Smith Falls, Ont. and Elizabeth Asselin of Lévis, Q.C. Brooke-Henderson and Asselin both carded rounds of even par (73).
Team Canada Development Sqaud member Leilanie Kim, 18, of Surrey B.C. finished the day in fourth, at 2-over (75).
In the Junior Boys division Adam Svensson is tied with three others – Lucas Kim of Toronto, Tae Won Kim of Richmondhill Ont. and Alexis Gemme Piacente of Montreal – at -1 (71) through 18 holes.
Svensson, 17, is looking to build off his remarkable 2010 season which included wins at the Canadian Juvenile Boy’s Championship, CN Future Links Pacific Championship and Callaway Junior World Golf Championship as well as two other provincial tournament titles.
The second round of the CN Future Links Ontario Championship tees off Saturday at 7:30 am EST.
