Ottawa Valley Golf Association Names 2024 Hall of Fame Inductees

MARCH 12, 2024 (Ottawa, Ontario) – The Ottawa Valley Golf Association (OVGA) is pleased to announce its fourth class of inductees into the OVGA Hall of Fame. We welcome Vera Charlebois, Stan Horne, Lise Jubinville and Dwight Reinhart in the Player Category, as well as Jeff Bauder and Scott MacLeod with Flagstick Golf Magazine, and Paul Sherratt in the Builder Category.

The OVGA Hall of Fame was established in 2021 to recognize, honour and perpetuate the memory of individuals and organizations that have made a significant and positive contribution to golf in the area served by the Association. Inductees include players, both amateur and professional, as well as builders within the area served by the Association.

Our fourth class of inductees in the OVGA Hall of Fame in 2024 recognizes golfers who have excelled in our sport and those who give back to the game”, said OVGA Hall of Fame Co-Chair, Dru Lafave. “I have great respect and admiration for the four players with outstanding careers, and three individuals in the Builder category who have dedicated significant time and effort over many years supporting competitive golf. It is also a real pleasure and a humbling experience to be co-chair of the OVGA Hall of Fame Committee.”

2024 OVGA Hall of Fame Inductees PLAYER CATEGORY:

VERA CHARLEBOIS – Chaudiere Golf Club

Vera Charlebois

In the sports pages in the local Ottawa newspapers for three decades in the 1970’s, 80’s and early 90’s, Vera Charlebois, a left-hand golfer from the Chaudiere, now Chateau Cartier Golf Club, located on the Upper Aylmer Road in Gatineau, Quebec, dominated the headlines for women’s golf in Eastern Ontario.

She was the Chaudiere’s Women’s Club Champion twenty-two times between 1967 and 1994. Locally in CLGA

– Ottawa District competitions, Vera was the winner of the Women’s Championship four times (1970, 1975, 1976 and 1980), the winner of the Senior Women’s Championship on six occasions (1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1992 with Chaudiere & 1995 with Emerald Links), and the winner of the 4-Ball Championship five times (1976/1977 with Cedarhill’s Rita Arnett, 1979 with Arnprior’s Aveleigh Ransom, 1980 with Chaudiere’s Joyce

Williams and in 1984 with Chaudiere’s Sue Desrochers). Vera was also the winner of the 1981 Marjorie Strong 2-Ball with Chaudiere club-mate Joyce Williams.

Provincially, Vera was the Quebec Senior Women’s Champion in 1982 and 1983, and a member of the Quebec Senior Women’s Team in 1982-1984 and 1994. In Canadian Senior Women’s Championships, Vera’s best showing was a third place finish in 1984.

During her lifetime, Vera had 2 holes-in-one and held course records at Chaudiere, Hylands (North) and Manderley Golf Clubs. She also found the time to serve on Executive Committees at the Chaudiere Golf Club and with the Ottawa District of the Canadian Ladies’ Golf Association. Vera was inducted into the Smiths Falls Recreation Hall of Fame in 1999.

Vera ended her golfing career as a teaching United States Golf Teachers Federation professional, spending over 10 years at Emerald Links Golf Club in Ottawa instructing, inspiring, and mentoring golfers.

STAN HORNE – Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club

Stan Horne, considered one of Canada’s first homebred professional golf stars during the 1930’s and 40’s, was regarded as a pioneer of the game. During Horne’s stellar career, he epitomized the role of a club professional. He was recognized as one of the fiercest competitors in the country, whose brilliant play made him a force to be reckoned with across North America. He was a fixture on the winter golf tours in the United States. His friendly and ever-obliging demeanor to his members was inspirational to some 33 assistants who studied under his tutelage.

Stan Horne was born in England and when he was just 6 months old, his family moved to Fonthill, Ontario. His father was the greenkeeper at the Lookout Point Golf Club where Stan would begin his career in golf as a caddy and a top amateur golfer. Under the tutelage of Fonthill’s renowned golf teacher, Art Keeling, Stan developed as a professional golfer, earning him a spot as a touring professional for the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club in 1936. For three consecutive, years Stan was the winner of the CPGA (now PGA of Canada) Championship.

In 1939, Horne moved to the Islesmere Golf Club. After 29 years, he left Islesmere to fulfill a dream of co- designing and supervising the building of the Nun’s Island golf course. He remained at Nun’s Island until his retirement.

LISE JUBINVILLE – Carleton Golf & Yacht Club & Hylands Golf Club

Lise Jubinville

Team sports had always been at the forefront with Lise Jubinville, dating back to her formative years in Winnipeg, Manitoba, pretty much keeping her occupied through all seasons in any given year.

However, it is with the game of golf that Lise has had the most success. As she says, “It’s the only individual sport that I’ve ever played. Golf is fun, but it also requires mental preparation and lots of practice. My goal is to play a perfect game of golf, however elusive that might be.” As competitive as Lise is, she enjoys her time on the golf course with everyone, whether it is in a social or competitive setting.

Since 2003, Lise Jubinville has made her mark in the golf community in the Ottawa area. Apart from winning club championships at Canadian, Carleton and Hylands Golf Clubs, Lise has an enviable record in local competitions. She has at least 17 individual championship wins, as well as 20 team wins with Brenda Pilon and one with Hylands Club-mate, Kevin Sleigh. Add to that record her Mina Denison Shield Team wins in the OVGA City & District Championships in 2005 with Carleton Golf & Yacht Club Team-mates Brenda Buck, Nancy Vrooman and Bonnie Wolff, and Hylands Team wins from 2020-2023 with team-mates Yinka Aiyede, Chantale Belley, Judy Collins, Diane Dolan, Pam Fraser, Janet Geiger, Nancy Gerritse, Stephanie Holland, Lyne Leclerc, and Brenda Pilon.

If her parents hadn’t got Lise Jubinville involved with golf at the junior level, one has to wonder if success in golf would have followed. Even though she didn’t stick with the game, it was always there as a social activity and blossomed when she moved to Ottawa to take a job with Softball Canada in 1998, and after working for 21 years, she recently retired.

Brenda Pilon made the following comments about her golf partner. “In golf, Lise also has a proven track record and is a tremendous amateur golfer, who is both physically and mentally strong. I consider myself extremely lucky to have her as my partner in team events such as the Sun Scramble and the OVGA 4BBB. Our success as a team is accented by how well we get along both on and off the golf course, as well as our trust in each other that one of us will execute a much-needed shot at a crucial time. Her calm and laidback demeanor helps keep my emotions in check and brings out the best in my game, allowing me to focus on the task at hand. Given her length off the tee, this usually means hitting a wedge into the green or sinking a putt. Her amateur golf record speaks for itself, and whoever coined the phrase “nice gals finish last” obviously never met Lise Jubinville.”

DWIGHT REINHART – Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club

Dwight Reinhart

Dwight Reinhart arrived in the Ottawa Valley to take up his head professional job at the Renfrew Golf Club in 2000 after 4-years as the head professional at the Pine Falls Golf Club in Pine Falls, Manitoba.

He certainly made a favourable impression at the Renfrew Golf Club, and as well in PGA of Ottawa competition, winning back-to-back Zone Championships in 2000 and 2001. Dwight left the golf industry in 2005, as he had a great opportunity for his family and a chance to have a more balanced life with his kids as a sales representative outside of golf.

Since applying for and regaining his amateur status in 2007, Dwight has continued to lead the way in Golf Quebec and OVGA Championships as well as local invitational tournaments. Dwight has represented Golf Quebec as a 7-time Mid-Am and 1-time Amateur team member in Canadian Championships and is most proud of the 2017 Mid-Am team of Summerlea’s Hugues Legault, Godefroy’s Sebastien Levasseur and himself, which finished in first place.

Dwight has also won club championships at Renfrew, Arnprior, Eagle Creek (3) and Ottawa Hunt & Golf Clubs.

Between 2010 and 2023, Dwight has won 6 Golf Quebec, 11 OVGA and 5 Open Championships, as well as the Deep River Invitational on three occasions. He is showing no signs of slowing down in his senior years as he still walks the golf course and was impressive in his 2023 OVGA Masters and OVGA City & District Championship wins.

PAUL SHERRATT – Royal Ottawa & Rideau View Golf Clubs

Paul Sheratt

Paul began his professional career as an assistant under Tom Mann at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club in 1973 and then moved over to the Rideau View Golf Club in the same capacity under Roger Dagenais in 1977. He assumed the position of head professional at Rideau View in 1980, a job he held until his retirement at the conclusion of the 2018 season. Paul was named Pro Emeritus at Rideau View in 2019.

The list of Paul’s career achievements tells a story about the results of the hard work he has put in throughout his working career. They don’t tell you about the seven days a week winter and summer that he worked and the family sacrifices made to bring revenue into his marriage with his wife Pat. Their deal was that Pat would manage the household while he managed the business and as he says, “Hers was a far greater sacrifice than mine was.”

Teaching is a part of the business that Paul enjoys to this day. As he says, “One of the greatest satisfactions I have had as a golf professional was being able to actually figure out how to hit a golf ball. And that made me a better teacher because I think I understood what a lot of people wouldn’t understand.”

Paul was inducted into the PGA of Canada Hall of Fame as its 35th Member on Canada Night at the PGA Golf Show in Orlando, Florida on January 24, 2019. Reflecting on that memorable occasion, Paul says, “Someone who has a genuine love for what they’re doing just does it because they wouldn’t know any other way to do their job. So, to go through your career and find out your Association thinks so much of what you’ve done, to be able to put you in the PGA of Canada Hall of Fame, I don’t know any other word than humble. I really don’t.”

Through the years in the Ottawa Valley, Paul has interacted with his Rideau View membership, his Boards of Directors and the men and women with the Ottawa Valley Golf Association. His achievements speak to his career and the OVGA Hall of Fame welcomes Paul Sherratt to the 2024 Class of Inductees in the Builder category. He has demonstrated a significant impact and influence on golf in the area served by the OVGA and beyond.

Full inductee profiles, as well as nomination procedures for the OVGA Hall of Fame are available on the OVGA website www.ovga.org under the “Hall of Fame” tab. Plans are underway for individual, as well as group award presentations to accommodate travel schedules.
