Rebecca Lee-Bentham Prevails At Smiths Falls

After a soggy day one for the Canadian Women’s Tour – Ontario at the Smiths Falls Golf & Country Club, tournament organizers and players caught a break on Wednesday.  Perfect temperatures and a slight breeze made for a perfect setting for the conclusion.  Having pros from the host course, Brooke Henderson and Brittany Henderson, in the mix for the title made it even more palatable for local fans who flocked to the course to see their local girls in action.

Despite the home course advantage for the sisters, it was Toronto’s Rebecca Lee-Bentham that completed the victory task after having been a co-leader after round one.

The Torontonian and member of the Golf Canada Young Pro Squad cleaned up the win with a closing 69 (-2) for a 140 (71-69) total.

The score was enough to put her three clear of her nearest competitor, fellow Young Pro Squad member, Brooke Henderson, who finished second alone.

There was a five-way tie for third place between Brittany Henderson, Jamila Jaxaleyeva, Jennifer Ha, Jennifer Greggain, and Leilanie Kim.

Ha won the trophy for low amateur.

Lee-Bentham had a roller coaster front nine in her closing round.  Three birdies were offset by one bogie and a double bogie on the sixth hole when her ball found a watery grave to the left of the green on her approach.  She recovered nicely to play the final twelve holes in three under par, punctuated by back to back birdies on holes fourteen and fifteen.  She was all smiles on the latter hole when she struck her approach to a foot and a half for an easy tap in.

“I went out with a really relaxed mindset which helped me to concentrate on each shot more and not worry about results. I think that’s what helped me today,” commented the new champion.

For her victory the 23 year-old who plays out of the King Valley Golf Club won $10,000 and an exemption into the 2015 Canadian Pacific Women’s Open to be played August 17-23 at the Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam, B.C. “It’s good knowing that I secured the spot. The CP Women’s Open is probably my favourite stop on tour, so just to have the opportunity to play in it again this year is a blessing,” Lee-Bentham related.
