Trillum Wood Repeats In Quinte Kingston A Division Intersectional

/ Blair Harris – QKIM

On Sunday August 27th, QKIM’s Men’s ‘A’ Division, which involved 4 sections and 14 teams, was completed for the 2023 season.

In the Division’s premier Section, hosted by Briar Fox Golf Club, four teams battled hard for QKIM Championship honours. Defending champion Trillium Wood GC held off strong challenges from Camden Braes, Briar Fox and Amherstview to win it all and earn bragging rights for another year.

The Trillium Wood team was led by Brian Bunnett, Ben Goheen and Trevor Phillips who each stepped up to win their three matches to sneak past Camden Braes. It should be noted that in recent years of QKIM play, Camden Braes has affectionately become known as Camden “Bros”, thanks to the presence of 4 Beneteau brothers on the club’s 8-man QKIM roster, not to mention their father Chris, who also plays on the team. This year, the Beneteau brothers — Thomas, Andrew, Stephen and team captain Peter — did everything they possibly could to reel in Trillium Wood, but just fell short.

Section 2 was held at Rivendell GC where the home team delivered a solid victory over Colonnade GCC and Picton GCC. Rivendell was led by team captain Mike Dillon who was fresh off his recent matching of his own course record of 64! Six Rivendell players earned maximum points, lifting their team into the top section of Men’s ‘A’ for 2024.

In Section 3 play, Smuggler’s Glen overcame The Landings home course advantage by edging the host club by 3 points to win the penultimate section. Smuggler’s Glen number 1 seed and QKIM veteran Charles Pal, won all 3 of his matches against The Landings, Garrison and Gananoque to deliver the decisive points. Not to be out done, eleven-year-old Wilson Doornekamp of The Landings also won his 3 matches, representing a great start to his QKIM Men’s ‘A’ Division career.

The greens were fast and challenging at Napanee GCC, the scene of the Section 4 matches. The home team dominated Roundel Glen GC and Evergreen GC with a near perfect score. Kevin Jackson, Roundel Glen’s No. 1 seed was the only player able to extract 2 points from Napanee.
