Senior golfers from the Ottawa Valley played in the OVGA Senior Golf Championships on July 18-19 at the Greensmere Golf Club in the West end of the City of Ottawa near Carp.

While everyone else in the Men’s Championship played 36 holes over the Premiere and Legacy courses at Greensmere over two days, John Taylor and Larry Morin had to play another 5 sudden-win holes to decide the OVGA Men’s Senior Championship.

Both players tied for 1st place with total scores of even par 144 over two days of competition. After tying the first two playoff holes with par, Mr. Morin left the door wide open when his tap-in par putt lipped out. Mr. Taylor was unable to sink his par putt and play continued. After another par for each, the 12th hole affectionately nicknamed the Dollies by its designer was where the championship would be decided. Teeing up first, Mr. Morin flared his drive towards the woods on the right and just coming up short. Mr. Taylor, who had won the senior division of the Flagstick Open on the weekend, launched his drive to the 150 yard mark in the centre of the fairway. Both players were able to hit second shots onto the sloping and elevated green and from there it was a putting contest. There has to be a winner in every contest and Rivermead’s Larry Morin two-putted to take home the W. G. Bedard Senior Championship Trophy after Public Player John Taylor took three putts.

Walking off the green after his win, Larry thanked the officials and his fellow competitors who had followed the overtime play to its conclusion. He later commented on his win – “It’s my first big win and also my first year in the senior division. I just wanted to do well, kind of get my name recognized  a little bit and to win the championship is just amazing. It’s very special. The golf course was in great shape and it was fun to play. Premiere was a little more open and today was a little more claustrophobic and tight. It made it even more special to have a good score today on this one (Legacy) as I had to manage my game a lot more. I was very happy to shoot what I did today.”

With both John and Larry entering the senior ranks this year, other senior OVGA players are now on notice.

The OVGA thanked the Greensmere Golf Club, its members and staff for allowing the two-day championship to be played on its two golf courses, which were in tremendous shape.

Congratulations to all OVGA participants and officials for another wonderful championship.
