Gananoque, Ontario, May 20th, 2015 – Based on the field alone, the seventh annual Flagstick Shootout is shaping up to be the best one ever. Taking place at Smuggler’s Glen Golf Course on Saturday, May 23rd and Sunday, May 24th, this elite amateur tournament had more than 150 applicants for the 60 spots that were available in the final field of 78 players.

The invited field features all the previous past champions who will face off over 36 holes of stroke play.

Leading the field this year are the five men who have managed to get their name engraved on the coveted Shootout Trophy so far.  That includes Allen McGee (7-time Ottawa City & District Champion and former Volvo World Amateur winner), Joe Matthews (perennial Smuggler’s Glen club champion), Dwight Reinhart (former Nationwide Tour player and 2x PGA of Ottawa Zone Champion), Clayton Presant (2x Shootout Champion and current NCAA player at Limestone College), and Robert Mustard (defending Shootout Champion and former winner of the OVGA Match Play Championship).

The quintent of former champions will be joined by fine players from all over Ontario and Quebec, including current NCAA players like Napanee’s Josh Whalen (Kent State), and Kingstonians Eric Macrow (Detroit Mercy), and Jesse Hogan (West Texas A&M).

In 2014 extra holes were required for Robert Mustard (67-72) to win the title. He and Eric Macrow (66-73) finished regulation play at -5.  Mustard prevailed on the second playoff hole.  Kent State University player and former Ontario Juvenile Champion Josh Whalen (76-69) took 3rd place.

“We’re extremely happy with the quality of the field this year. Once again some of the best amateur golfers in the country have chosen to compete at the Flagstick Shootout.  This is always a great kick-off to their competitive seasons and we appreciate them coming to play in the first of the three 2015 BMG Cup Series events,” said Tournament Director Jeff Bauder, Publisher of Flagstick Golf Magazine, who sponsors and operates the series.

The BMG CUP Series presented by Nike Golf was formed as a FedEX Cup style points series for amateur golfers.  The amateur golf series is made up of three events beginning with the Flagstick Shootout played at Smuggler’s Glen Golf Course, moves to the Flagstick Open at eQuinelle (July) and finishes with the Flagstick BCC Open at Brockville Country Club (September).

First round pairings (as well as subsequent pairings and results) are posted in the BMG CUP Series Portal at www.bmgcup.com
